Therapy as a journey

Beginning therapy is like embarking on an inner personal journey toward a new vision of your life. It shows great strength to reach out for help, especially when you feel vulnerable.

Therapy is a safe place for you to reflect and receive support and guidance about what matters most to you – your well-being.

In many ways it is a sacred journey… for by being courageous and connecting with your sorrow and pain, you make your hopes and dreams possible.

Let me show you how therapy brings awareness to yourself in the fictional client’s journal below…

Today, my good friend told me, “Maybe you should talk to someone.”
I felt shame hearing that, maybe something is wrong with me.

It’s freaking me out to think that I need to go to therapy,
because I can’t figure out how to get over this breakup on my own.

It’s true, I’m not doing well… I know it, my friend knows it, even my dog knows it.
But if I go to therapy, then I can no longer play hide and seek with myself
or pretend I’m drinking lemonade.

What can I lose here, really… what more can I lose? I’ve already lost my boyfriend,
now losing sleep and can’t focus on anything other than Netflix.
Heck, I’m not sure when I last laughed.

So… I found someone online and called and made an appointment.
She specializes in working with people like me who feel lost and overwhelmed after loss.

At first it was scary and weird. I thought to myself,
“What’s become of me, sitting on a shrink’s couch and talking to a stranger
who was deeply listening and nodding?”

But she was compassionate and caring. Being in her office felt soothing.
I felt relaxed. She calmly asked me questions about my feelings
and life that I didn’t know how to answer.

When I went home, it dawned on me that it was beyond weird
that I did not know how to answer questions about my own life.
Geez, I learned that I didn’t even know what I wanted or what would make me happy.

So, I kept going back… despite parts of me finding many reasons to not, and of all things,
we got to know those parts of me and then even thanked them for
how they were trying to protect me.

I looked forward to going and started to feel more confident in myself.

Initially, she was curious about me… and then I was curious about me.

She understood me… and then I understood me.

She cared about me… and then I cared about me!

Identifying what needs to change comes first.

Your therapy session will begin with clarifying what you want changed in your life.

I also will ask questions about your present struggles and past hurts, because it’s important to include your strengths and positive influences, too.

Next comes finding your true self.

You will learn mindfulness skills, so you can start the process of inner self-reflection.

We will explore your fears and painful emotions with compassion and curiosity.

I recognize that your past may have contributed to your current struggle, so you will be offered a way to heal your inner child parts. As a result, you can feel free to be your authentic and full self.

Therapy provides a path to growth.

Nature shows us the promise of renewal and rebirth. Growth happens after the period of hibernation or rest.

Therapy is a way for you to move through your own seasons of growth and create a life of meaning and joy.

You’ll get through this. I can help.
